DUBAI: The British University in Dubai (BUiD) has announced the launch of three new undergraduate engineering programmes set to begin in the 2025–2026 academic year.

The additions include a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

The move marks a strategic expansion of the university’s academic offerings in response to national workforce needs and global shifts in infrastructure and technology.

Skills for the future

The new engineering programmes are designed to prepare students for a dynamic future, with an emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and smart infrastructure. Students will benefit from a rigorous academic foundation supported by hands-on learning through practical labs, design projects, and industry partnerships. The aim is to nurture critical thinking, real-world problem-solving, and leadership qualities among graduates.

According to Professor Bassam Abu-Hijleh, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and IT, these programmes will complement BUiD’s existing Bachelor of Science in Electro-Mechanical Engineering. “We are very proud to launch these new engineering programmes,” he said. “By combining strong technical foundations with real-world experience, we’re preparing graduates to drive progress in energy, infrastructure, and technology.”

From developing cleaner energy systems and designing smart cities to improving urban safety and sustainability, students will gain specialised knowledge and the tools needed to contribute meaningfully to national and international projects.

Academic excellence

The expansion reflects BUiD’s continued commitment to academic excellence and strategic alignment with the UAE’s Vision 2031, which places emphasis on digital innovation, green economy, and sustainable development. The new degrees are also in step with the global demand for multi-disciplinary engineers who are prepared for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Founded in 2003 under Dubai Law No. 5 by the late Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, BUiD operates as a not-for-profit institution. It is governed by a Council formed every three years by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and chaired by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

The university enjoys strong academic support through alliances with leading Russell Group institutions in the UK, including the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, and University of Manchester – all ranked in the global top 100. BUiD’s programmes are licensed by the UAE Ministry of Education and are globally quality-assured by the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).

Strategic collaborations

BUiD maintains strong collaborations with a variety of government bodies and industry leaders. Key contributors include the Knowledge Fund Establishment, Emirates NBD, and Atkins, among others. The institution works closely with both public and private sectors to ensure that its academic offerings remain relevant and impactful.

Currently, BUiD offers full- and part-time programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including doctoral and PhD studies, in areas such as education, business, law, finance, IT, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. The new engineering degrees further strengthen its position as a hub for high-quality, globally-aligned education in the region.
